Cookbooks I rate highly tend to be the ones from which I learn something, that have solid recipes, that offer something unique, and that are functional. I'm especially brutal about user-unfriendly fonts and poor organization of content. It seems that comparing this to something by Paula Wolfert or Alton Brown is comparing apples to oranges.
This is a very, very simple book. And maybe that's the beauty of it. When you're in the middle of the hol I'm really undecided about how to rate this book. When you're in the middle of the holidays and needing to come up with something to fill gift tins or take to a potluck, do you really want to take on a cooking challenge or do you just want some good ideas for crowd-pleasing treats? After all, making bark is about the simplest thing you can make with chocolate, so why complicate it?
For an experienced candymaker who obsesses over tempering or finetuning flavor reductions and who is comfortable with advanced techniques, this book will be a complete snooze and waste of paper.
Coconut Candy Recipes
For someone like me who doesn't make or eat a lot of candy, the book is useful: what you make from it will come out the way it's pictured, and most candy lovers will like it. Some of her recipes make the process sound easier than it actually is. She also recommends using untempered chocolate as a coating which does not strike me as a good idea. This well-illustrated book is a good beginning from which the novice candymaker could then move on to a more comprehensive text.
